Is Christian Education Worth the Investment? Three Important Questions

Many times, it is. Maybe now more than ever. Recently, I was reading this article by Rod Dreher in the American Conservative. Our culture, it seems, has gone sort of insane. It has stopped letting God's Word or even nature to be instructive. 

When that happens, Christian parents will try to protect their children from such bad ideas taught and enforced by adults...and they should. 

Sometimes we are tempted just to escape from cultural insanity (and we should where we can), but we should also be running toward something. Great Christian schools give parents and students a vision for the good life and preparation for real life. 

Here are three important questions when you are considering investing in Christian education. 

1. How much impact does an education have on the life of your child?

A lot. Education, whether a child goes to a school or is homeschooled begins at home, but it ends in the life of a community. Deuteronomy 6 and Ephesians 6 show us this clearly. We don't need a Bible class or Sunday School alone (although those things can be helpful). Deuteronomy tells us to immerse our children an environment of belief. It wants us to talk with them when they are walking and when they are sitting and when they are lying down. Sadly, our publc schools can't do this--or they won't do this with the Bible. Look back at Dreher's article. It is clear that the schools in Ft. Worth do have religious and ethical commitments...but these commitments are not biblical ones. This is heart-breaking because children--especially young children--need this so badly. 

2. How crucial is it that your child is prepared to think, communicate, and stand for Christ in the future? 
Massively important! It is more important now than ever before in American history. Often in America the culture was much more believing and biblically literate. We are not now. So much is thrown at our children. They have to be ready to think. They have to be prepared to stand with wisdom or be prepared to be washed away. This is why a classical education is so important. It stresses learning facts, but it also stresses how to think and how to communicate. 

3. How well does the particular school prepare your child for their future?
This is the most important question. If a school is having consistent impact of encouraging faith in Christ; if a school is preparing students to think, communicate, and stand strong; if the school gives your child an education that prepares them for the future; then it is more than worth it!
